I really have no idea when I bought my first domain name … I guess it was around 1998, I just checked my account history at Godaddy and that only goes back as far as 2002 so I cannot remember who I used before that.
Anyways … I’m sure you are all familiar with domain names, if you have a website then you need one and if you get a good one then it can be resold as an asset in its own right. I have owned HUNDREDS of domains over the years and there’s no way I’d ever be able to remember them all. I also have no idea where I learned about this but I vaguely recall several training ebooks and bits of software that I owned … probably still on my archive hard drive somewhere !
The theory here is pretty straightforward, look to buy domains with popular keywords or trending topics and then list them on a domain marketplace such as sedo.com. When I was building my affiliate websites to sell on Ebay naturally I wanted good brandable names for the sites and so I bought and sold loads during that process. I also got a taste for buying domains and keeping them (Too many, too long !) pretty early on so I still have a lot …. you get quite sentimental over some of them and when renewal time comes around I have to try and be objective !
Over the years I have only had a couple of really notable sales in terms of price … In fact I just logged into my Sedo account while writing this article and I’m surprised how many transactions I have done and totally forgotten about !
Just looking at my current domain portfolio and I can see I have 37 at the moment … some of which I have been planning to build websites on …. for like 15 years ! Ah well, all in good time I guess.
I recently sold webmasterauction.com just a few months ago after totally forgetting about it and renewing it for like … years and years !
This can still be a great area to operate in, I’m hooked on domains but it can take a really long time to secure a sale and the renewal fees can hurt when your portfolio hits a certain size, I have recently started moving my domains from Godaddy to OVH and namecheap to try and save some money.
I have not been pro-active flipping domains for quite some time but I did find this great article if you’d like to learn more.
